Intro to Business Students Visit McDonald's Hamburger University


Students in Mr. Mirandola's Intro to Business classes had the chance to learn about business from McDonald's executives during a recent trip to Hamburger University.  Beside from touring the training facility, students learned about franchising from Bob Villa and worldwide operations from Jim Kepple.

FCCLA club

The FCCLA club baked cookies after school to use them to practice cookie decorating techniques to prepare for the regional competition at the College of DuPage.
Come join them for the fun of decorating at the next meeting on November 28th!

We will have a cake decorator there to assist us with our techniques.

Winners of the Tom & Eddie's Burger Challenge

Congratulations to the 3rd Period Intro to Business class for winning this semester's Tom & Eddie's Burger Challenge.  The 3rd Period class won the competition by selling 94 Buffalo Jack Burgers.  The Buffalo Jack narrowly edged out the BBQ Blitz Burger created by North's 5th Period class.  BBQ Blitz finished with 92 burgers sold.  Congratulations to both teams.

Beginning Monday, November 19th, the Buffalo Jack Burger will be on the Tom & Eddie's menu for 30 days.

Burger Challenge at Tom & Eddie's

For the second year, Intro to Business students competed in Tom & Eddie's Burger Challenge.  This competition required each class to create and market an original burger that was placed on Tom & Eddie's menu for one evening.  The burger that generates the most sales is declared the winner.  The entries in this year's Burger Challenge included:  3rd Period's Buffalo Jack Burger and 5th Period's BBQ Blitz Burger.  This year the two classes from North competed against two Intro to Business classes from South.

Results will be released on Wednesday, November 14.

Chicago Bear Corey Wootton Speaks to Sports & Entertainment Marketing Students




















On Monday, November 5th, Corey Wootton of the Chicago Bears and his agent Mike McCartney spoke to Sports and Entertainment Marketing students.  The presentation focused on marketing an NFL athlete.  Corey Wootton is a Northwestern University grad and is in his third year at defensive end for the Bears.  The afternoon before this presentation, Corey returned a blocked punt for a touchdown; his first in the NFL. Mike McCartney has spoken to Sports & Entertainment Marketing students on numerous occasions about his role representing NFL players.

FCCLA Students Attend Their Annual Fall Leadership Conference


North High FCCLA students attended their annual Fall Leadership Conference at Ashton Place on September 20th. "Attitude is Everything" was the message stressed by the motivational  speaker Sam Glenn. Students were entertained by his sense of humor even though his speech provided a serious message. "The Choices We Make Determine the Direction We Take".-Sam Glenn

Architecture Students Learn From Local Builder




Students in Tony Ciezadlo's Architecture course have been visiting a home being built in Downers Grove to learn from Tim Oko, the builder.  This home is being built for a very important resident of the Downers Grove community, and students have been able to visit the construction site to see it being built from start to finish.  In total, students will make four visits to check on the progress and learn about home construction.

On Wednesday, April 18th, Intro to Business classes from Downers North and South competed in Tom & Eddie's Burger Challenge.  Each class created their own gourmet burger and designed a marketing plan to generate sales of their burger.  The burger with the highest sales between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. was declared the winner.  The results were:  (DGN) Southwest Wildfire Burger-30 units sold, (DGS) Mustang Meltdown-59 units sold, and the (DGN) Lone Star Burger-104 units sold.  The Period 2 Intro to Business class at North, who created the winning Lone Star Burger, will have thier burger featured on the Tom & Eddie's menu for 30 days.  In addition, students will receive a catered lunch from Tom & Eddie's.  A portion of the sales for this evening will be donated to the West Suburban Humane Society.  A charity chosen by the Intro to Business students.

Burger Challenge With Tom & Eddie's


The Burger Challenge between Intro to Business classes at Downers North and South is set for Wednesday, April 18th, from 5-9pm. Classes from DGN created the Lone Star Burger and the Southwest Wildfire Burger. A class from DGS has come up with their own creation. Come vote for the DGN burgers by purchasing one Wednesday evening. The burger with the most votes (purchased most) will be placed on the Tom & Eddie's menu for at least a month.

Students Learn About Marketing From The Bulls





On Wednesday, February 22nd, DECA and Sports & Entertainment Marketing students attended Career Day with the Chicago Bulls.  The afternoon began with presentations from various executives of the Bulls.  The executives spoke about their job, the ways in which they are responsible for marketing the Bulls, as well as advice for high school students who aspire to work within a professional sports organization.  Students were allowed to remain in their seats after the presentation to watch the Bulls shootaround.  The evening concluded with a Bulls victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Fourteen DECA Students Qualify For State

DGN had another great showing at the DECA regional competition held in St. Charles on January 26th.  Fourteen students placed in the top ten in their respective categories to qualify for the state competition this March.  DECA is a student organization that focuses on marketing in business.

Foods 2 Students Celebrate the End of First Semester



Ms. Bolinger's Foods 2 Students celebrated the end of first semester with a breakfast.  Students made Christmas Morning Breakfast Casserole, Quiche Lorraine, baked french toast with maple syrup, and bacon.
